Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng on Tuesday night summoned U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns to lodge stern representations and opposition against U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to China's Taiwan region.
Xie said Pelosi is deliberately provoking and playing with fire and China will never sit idly by and do nothing as the visit seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, undermines the political foundation of Sino-U.S. relations, violates China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, and sends a wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces.
The Chinese diplomat accused the U.S. of treachery on the Taiwan question, saying that the U.S. government must take responsibility for provocations that have led to escalating tensions across the Taiwan Straits and damage to China-U.S. relations.
"The U.S. side must pay the price for its mistakes. China will resolutely take countermeasures, and we will do what we say," Xie said.
Meanwhile, he urged Washington to make immediate corrections and take practical measures to eliminate the negative influence of Pelosi's Taiwan visit and warned that the U.S. should stop meddling in China's internal affairs and going further down a wrong and dangerous path.
"Taiwan is China's Taiwan and will eventually return to the embrace of the motherland," he said. "No country, no force, and no one should underestimate the strong determination, firm will and powerful ability of the Chinese government and people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity and achieve national rejuvenation and reunification."
