China is willing to work with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to build a model for common development, said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi while co-chairing the China-ASEAN (10+1) Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Thursday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Wang said China is stepping up the implementation of its commitment to providing development assistance to ASEAN countries and helping the Global Development Initiatives' implementation in ASEAN.

Both sides should actively unleash new momentum for development and address pressing challenges, such as public health, food and energy, Wang said.

The Chinese foreign minister said China and ASEAN countries should set a benchmark for strong connectivity, calling for jointly promoting high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and high-quality implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) pact.

Wang also urged efforts to strengthen global governance coordination, stressing China and the ASEAN countries should adhere to open regionalism, promote genuine multilateralism, expand and strengthen the ASEAN-led regional structure, jointly safeguard the interests of developing countries and make "Asian contributions" to global governance.

Stressing the importance of maintaining regional peace and stability, Wang told the ASEAN foreign ministers that the Global Security Initiative shares the same security philosophy advocated by ASEAN and is in line with the purpose of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.

He urged China and ASEAN to accelerate the consultation process of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, adding that the countries in the region should grasp the key to peace and stability in the South China Sea in "our own hands."

Wang further elaborated on China's stern position on the U.S.'s violation of China's sovereignty, and the ASEAN foreign ministers issued a statement on the cross-strait situation, reaffirming their adherence to the one-China principle.
