Kinetic pictograms have preiviously been used at other Games, such as the Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022, but never before in the Asiad.

According to the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games Organizing Committee (HAGOC), the Hangzhou 2022 pictograms will be widely used in competition venues, urban main roads, and promotional materials to create a distinctive and appealing atmosphere for the Games.

The color, "rainbow purple", is in line with the overall aesthetic design of the Games. The background music in the promotion video incorporated both the Jiangnan Sizhu, a traditional string instrument which originated in the locale of Hangzhou, and traditional Chinese drums to create a sports-like rhythm.

In July, The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced the 19th Asian Games would now take place from September 23 to October 8, 2023, which is a postponement of one year from its original schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
