China's countermeasures in response to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the Taiwan region are a legitimate defense of national sovereignty and security, which are completely "justified, reasonable and lawful," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday at a regular presser.
Wang made the remarks in response to claims by some Taiwan officials that China is using the visit as an excuse to conduct military exercises.
The countermeasures are a necessary warning against the provocations made by the U.S. and "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, the spokesperson said.
There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, Wang added.
The Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities and the "Taiwan independence" forces have distorted facts and called black white, once again exposing the nature of their "independence-seeking" split, he said.
It is the common aspiration and sacred responsibility of all Chinese sons and daughters to realize the complete reunification of the motherland, the trend of the times cannot be reversed, Wang said.
Noting that China's military exercises around its Taiwan island are "open, transparent and professional," Wang pointed out that the exercises are consistent with domestic and international laws, as well as established international practices. This serves as a message of warning to the provocateurs and is also a legitimate move to safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity.
