Polls opened on Tuesday as Kenyans voted in general elections in the East African country.

Around 22.1 million Kenyans will vote to elect a new president, as well as members of the National Assembly and the Senate.

The African Union, together with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), is monitoring the elections through an observation mission.

Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto are leading in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is stepping down after serving since April 2013, due to constitutional term limits.

In several locations, hundreds of voters queued up hours before the polls opened. This economic hub of East Africa may have a presidential runoff for the first time because the race is widely regarded as being close.
