Thousands of people have signed up to volunteer in Sanya as the Chinese resort city continues to battle a resurgence of COVID-19. British expat Iain Inglis has lived in Hainan Province for 15 years and is the second foreigner on the southern island to have obtained the Chinese "green card." He says volunteering is his way of trying to repay the kindness Chinese people have shown him over the years. Though a snap closure to stem the highly contagious Omicron strain has come as a shock to many, Inglis says swift government action and cooperation from the population are key to China's dynamic zero-COVID strategy. He hopes the tropical island, with its natural beauty and distinct ethnic cultures, will continue to attract visitors from around the world.
