China's Zhang Shuai and Zheng Qinwen advanced to the second round at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Toronto Masters on Tuesday, setting up the next round with Romanian Simona Halep and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, respectively.
Zhang and Zheng rose to world No.43 and No.46 after the first round, in which Zhang took an easy 2-0 (6-1, 6-3) victory against Spain's Cristina Bucsa, while Zheng had to come back from one set down to overcome Canadian Rebecca Marino 3-6, 7-6(5) ,6-4.
Zhang, 33, has enjoyed a fruitful season so far, clinching a singles' title in Lyon and finishing 1st and 2nd in the doubles' events respectively in Nottingham and Wimbledon.
Zheng is registered in the doubles' event with Australia's Storm Sanders in Toronto this time.
Teenage star Zheng was only a few points away from being eliminated in the tiebreak of the second set, before she took the game 7-5 after Marino was leading 3-0. She went on to win the match in a total of two hours and 28 minutes.
Also on Tuesday, China's Wang Qiang beat Georgian Mariam Bolkvadze 2-0 to reach the second round of the Thoreau Open in Concord, the United States.
