The Chinese mainland on Thursday warned the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities that any attempt to seek "Taiwan independence" by colluding with external forces is doomed to fail.

The DPP's provocations in collusion with the external forces will only push Taiwan into the abyss of disaster, said Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Wang made the comments when asked about the DPP authorities' claim that the mainland was trying to establish a "new normal" and to "intimidate" the island, and about Taiwan's latest round of live-fire exercises on the day.

"Realizing the complete reunification of the motherland is the common will of all Chinese people and is an irresistible historical trend. We are willing to create a broad space for peaceful reunification, but will never leave any space for all forms of 'Taiwan independence' or separatist activities," he said.

Meanwhile, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, on Thursday warned that any attempt to distort, dispute or deny the one-China principle as well as seeking "Taiwan independence" will end in failure.

His remarks came as a response to the DPP authorities' smear of a latest white paper issued by the mainland as "wishful thinking."

According to the white paper, titled "The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era," the two sides of the Taiwan Straits have fallen into a state of protracted political confrontation as a result of the civil war in China in the late 1940s and the interference of external forces.

"But the sovereignty and territory of China have never been divided and will never be divided, and Taiwan's status as part of China's territory has never changed and will never be allowed to change," said the white paper.

Ma blasted the DPP authorities for distorting the special state of protracted political confrontation as "Taiwan and the mainland not subordinate to each other."

"Such separatist stance is the real 'wishful thinking' and reckless disregard for the facts," he said. "It is a sheer lie."
