Novak Djokovic will lead Serbia to compete at the upcoming Davis Cup Finals which begin on September 13 at Pavello Municipal Font de Sant Lluis in Valencia, Spain.

Though Djokovic's world rankings dropped to sixth after he missed a series of events, including the Australian Open, because of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate, he won the title at the Wimbledon Championships in July.

Serbia is in the same group with Spain, Canada and South Korea. Spain won't have their ace Rafael Nadal at least during the group stage. The 22-time Grand Slam winner was dealing with an abdominal injury which forced him to withdraw before the Wimbledon semifinals and cost him the Canadian Open in Montreal this month.

Nadal will return at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati this week. World's No. 4 Carlos Alcaraz will lead Spain against the three opponents during the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals.

Britain, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands and the U.S. are in Group D at Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scottland. Former world's No. 1 Andy Murray will play for Britain again since 2019. He beat Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 2-1 (7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-5) in the first-round match of the Western & Southern Open on Monday.

"I was hanging on in the third set," Murray said during an on-court interview. "I was struggling a bit. So was Stan. We're not young anymore."
