The Texas Rangers have fired their manager Chris Woodward, the team announced on Monday. Third-base coach Tony Beasley was named the interim manager for the rest of the 2022 season.

The Rangers are 52-63, third in the American League (AL) West by Monday. They may in the end do better than last season (60-102), but are likely to miss the playoffs for the sixth straight time, three of which under Woodward.

"We did not come into this season thinking we had put together a championship roster," Rangers president of baseball operations Jon Daniels said. "We thought we'd taken a major step forward in talent from where we were a year ago. We've certainly had aspirations maybe to overachieve some and still do have those, but we were, and continue to be, realistic about where we are. ... That said, we did think that we'd be better than our record, and better than the way that we've played at times."

The Rangers signed free agent shortstop Corey Seager on a 10-year, $325 million contract, biggest deal in franchise history, in December 2021. The team also acquired shortstop and second baseman Marcus Semien via free agency on a seven-year, $175 million contract. Therefore, the team's current record is hardly satisfactory.

"I think it's just the overall structure, the environment," Rangers general manager Chris Young said. "It's not necessarily the content of the preparation, but the way it's utilized. The way we utilize meetings, the way we utilize different resources throughout the day, creating a structure that's really tailored towards winning a game every single day when we come in, and we felt like at times that got a little loose."

Though the team signed a contract extension with Woodward last November through 2023 with an option for 2024, it didn't save him from being sacked. When he took over from Jeff Banister in 2018, the Rangers were going through a rebuild from ranking last in the AL West with a 67-95 record. They had another two bottoming seasons in 2020 and 2021 since then.

With the fourth-worst team earned run average (ERA) in the AL, the Rangers will need to make enhancements in the pitcher position. Left-hander Martin Perez is very talented but the team needs depth to make a difference.
