FIFA agreed to cancel the postponed 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup qualifier game between Brazil and Argentina after reaching a deal with the football associations of the two countries.

The game, which was originally scheduled to happen at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paolo on September 5, 2021, was suspended minutes after the kickoff. Brazilian officials entered the field, saying that multiple Argentine players didn't comply with the COVID-19 protocols.

Though both teams played one fewer game than the rest of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) teams, Brazil and Argentina still secured qualification for the coming World Cup in Qatar as top two of the confederation. As the World Cup is only three months away and many players have to participate in European leagues competitions, dragging them across half of the Earth to play such a game seems to risky.

Therefore, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and Argentine Football Association (AFA) both understandably didn't want to play this game. The two associations agreed to pay fines, 25 percent of which will be donated to the World Health Organization (WHO) to battle the coronavirus.

Argentina will be in Group C with Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia. Brazil is in Group G with Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon at the World Cup in Qatar.

Tite, manager of Brazil, hit back against the comments by French striker Kylian Mbappe about European teams playing higher-quality games than their South American counterparts.

"Argentina and Brazil don't have that level of competition in South America, the football is not as developed as in Europe, that is why most recent World Cup winners have been Europeans," Mbappe said in May.

"Maybe [Mbappe] is talking about these Nations League clashes or European friendlies, but not World Cup qualifiers," Tite said in an interview with ESPN on Tuesday. "We don't have, with all due respect, Azerbaijan to play. We don't have anyone that gives you a break. The qualifiers here have a much higher degree of difficulty than the group stage [of European qualifying]."
