The New York Knicks have re-engaged with the Utah Jazz over trade for All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, according to The Athletic. The Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets are also interested in acquiring him.

The Knicks already held talks with the Jazz over a possible trade centered on Mitchell during the NBA summer league in July. However, the discussions were going nowhere back then. Now that the training camp is less than two months away, the Knicks have reached out again to the Jazz.

The Athletic revealed that the Jazz are in no hurry to send Mitchell away. The player himself is comfortable with both staying in Salt Lake City and joining a new team.

The Jazz traded three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves for five players, four future first-round draft picks and a swap in July. Intentionally or not, this deal set an unreasonably high standard for teams to follow.

For example, the Jazz reportedly asked for as many as six to seven first rounders, including swaps, for trading Mitchell. That was one of the reasons their negotiations with the Knicks led to nothing in July.

Michell became the leader of the Jazz immediately when he entered the league in 2017 and averaged 23.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.8 triples at 36.1 percent of 3-point rate during his career. The team have never missed the playoffs since he arrived, but couldn't go further than the Western Conference semifinals either in all of the past five seasons.

Mitchell is an explosive guard and a productive scorer who had two 50+points games in the postseason. However, his individual offense relied heavily on shooting off the dribble in the middle range which could affect his efficiency as he couldn't always keep a good touch. Furthermore, Mitchell is only 1.85 meters tall and far from running offense like a real playmaker. All of these hold him back from playing a bigger role on court.

The Knicks, which surprisingly made it back to the playoffs in 2021 but almost failed to do so with the same squad in 2022, landed free agent Jalen Brunson on a four-year, $104 million contract during the off-season. If Mitchell joins them, he can make a very explosive back-court pair with Brunson. Nonetheless, they may also be one of the worst orchestrator pairs in the league, not to mention their defensive shortcomings of the two undersized guards.

If Mitchell joins the Hornets, he can focus on implementing scoring duties as LaMelo Ball is a born orchestrator. The team's fast, small-ball style of playing can also maximize the power of Mitchell in charging the rim. However, again, the Hornets are not a qualified defensive team and Mitchell doesn't have much to add to the franchise on that front.

The Wizards inked a five-year, $251 million extension with Bradley Beal during the off-season and will try to build a competitive squad around him. As a top scorer, Beal has developed  his orchestrating ability well in recent years. Nonetheless, Mitchell will only become the second-in-command if he joins the Wizards and neither will the team immediately become a championship contender in the East after he arrives.
