China urges U.S. not to miscalculate its resolve to defend sovereignty

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday urged the United States not to miscalculate China's resolve to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity on the question of China's Taiwan region.

Wang Wenbin made the comments at a regular press briefing in response to reports that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink claimed that the Chinese mainland's "efforts to coerce and undermine Taiwan risk miscalculation."

With U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to China's Taiwan region, the U.S. has broken its one-China commitment and undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, not the other way around, said Wang.

"It is a U.S. leader who went to Taiwan to support 'Taiwan independence' secessionist activities, not a Chinese one who went to the U.S. to support the independence of Alaska," he said.

In the wake of Pelosi's visit, China began a series of joint military exercises and training activities around the Taiwan Island. Chinese officials have said the exercises are open, transparent, professional, and in line with China's domestic laws, international law and international practices.

Wang said it was reasonable, legitimate and natural for China to have resolute response to the U.S. provocation, and the Chinese side has been supported by the international community.

If the U.S. side wants to solve the problem, there is only one way out, which is to return to the three China-U.S. joint communiques and the one-China principle, said the spokesperson.
