Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern after a series of blasts in Afghanistan this month and strongly condemned an attack on a mosque in Kabul on Wednesday.

In a statement via his spokesperson on Thursday, Guterres sent his condolences to all the victims' families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

"We deplore yesterday's attack in a Kabul mosque, the latest in a disturbing series of bombings which have killed & injured more than 250 people in recent weeks, the highest monthly number of civilian casualties over the last year," the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) tweeted on Thursday.

According to police in Afghanistan, an explosion occurred in the mosque during evening prayers, killing 21 people and injuring 33. It is not yet clear who was responsible for the attack.
