Brian Cashman, general manager of the New York Yankees, expressed his confidence in the team and manager Aaron Boone despite their recent struggling performances.
The Yankees had an incredible start of the 2022 MLB season as they were 69-34 before August. However, the team suffered 14 losses in the following 20 games. Though still leading the American League (AL) East, they have fallen behind the Houston Astros (78-45) in the AL.
Fans of the Yankees, which are one of the most successful teams in MLB history, were frustrated at their team's struggles. So was manager Boone who slammed the tables at multiple press conferences.
"The group has my belief," Cashman said before Monday's game against the New York Mets. "I believe strongly in them, and I think they are still capable of everything we've ever hoped and dreamed, but we have to weather the storm first and foremost."
The Yankees defeated the Mets 4-2 to secure their first consecutive wins in August.

The general manager also expressed his support for Boone. "I think he's done a great job. I think he's managed his players extremely well. ... He's even-keel. It's important for our players to see that, because if he can keep his temperament the same, for the most part, they don't see panic. It doesn't mean he can't lose his cool, which he will from time to time, when necessary," Cashman said.
The catastrophic performance of right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas was part of the reasons behind the Yankees' struggles. The team traded for him with the Oakland Athletics this month and he allowed 14 runs in 14 innings with an earned run average (ERA) of 9.00 since he arrived. The Yankees also sent Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Diamondbacks for Harrison Bader at the beginning of this month. While Montgomery pitched for an ERA of 0.54 in three starts to concede only one run in 16⅔ innings, Bader has not played in any game because of injuries.
"You wouldn't change the attempt to acquire him, but we were unaware of him being out of pocket," Cashman said of Montas. "So, you add in being out for 10 to 12 days before his next start on top of him building back from being down for a period of time, and now transition to another club, he just hasn't gotten out of the gates as well."

The Yankees finished the 2021 regular season with 92-70 and were knocked out by the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild Card Game.
"I believe in this group," he said. "I know Aaron Boone believes in this group. I know our ownership believes in this group. It's a good crew that's dedicated, that's hungry and that's really talented, that's just happened to play poorly for a little longer than maybe we would have expected based on how we got out of the gates the first three months. But I'm not going to just forget that."
