At least 17 people, including three children aged three, six, and 10, were killed as Ethiopian air forces bombed Tigray regional state's capital Mekelle, local Tigrai TV reported Friday.
The report said the airstrike landed in a kindergarten and the target included residential areas, hotels, and small businesses.
The Ethiopian government did not immediately comment on the airstrike but its communication service later urged Tigrayan citizens to stay away from military and training facilities, saying the government intended to "take actions to target the military forces."
The strike comes days after fighting resumed on the border of the Tigray and Amhara regions between the national government and forces from the Tigray region.
Both sides have blamed each other for breaking the four-month-old ceasefire between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the party that controls Tigray.
