Several craven and narcissistic Western politicians have recently been eager to cross the ocean to play the ever-dependable "Taiwan card." Why are they so obsessed with visiting the island? Because having enjoyed free and headline-grabbing shopping sprees, gorging themselves and chanting slogans, they see their actions being converted into real political capital back home!

Although a certain Western country claims to be consistent with regard to the one-China policy, it has sold weapons to Taiwan, allowed top officials to visit the region, and even once deleted "Taiwan is part of China" from its official website. It has proven through its own actions that preaching is one thing, but practicing is quite another.

As a matter of fact, its backing for "Taiwan independence" is fraught with money politics. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has splurged on lobbying the U.S. and other Western governments with their self-proclaimed admiration for "democracy and freedom." In Taiwan, do democracy and freedom come at a price?

However, it is the local people who must pay for these invitations to Western politicians. DPP's collusion with foreign anti-China forces in pursuit of independence is akin to drinking from the proverbial poisoned chalice, and will ultimately prove to be its undoing.

Having shattered cross-Strait peace and acted against the historic trend of China's reunification and the interests of the Chinese nation, these "Taiwan independence" forces only add to their self-inflicted mortal wounds and invite greater sanctions from Beijing.
