French President Emmanuel Macron and his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Saturday declared a "new, irreversible dynamic of progress" in their nations' relations, concluding a visit by Macron aimed at ending months of tensions.

In a joint declaration, they said "France and Algeria have decided to open a new era ... laying the foundation for a renewed partnership expressed through a concrete and constructive approach, focused on future projects and youth."

Macron arrived in the North African country on Thursday for a three-day visit aimed at easing the strained ties and boosting cooperation.

Algiers and Paris have failed to normalize ties as the two nations are still unable to settle the issues regarding their past that include France's colonial rule of Algeria.

Their bilateral ties were also hit by a diplomatic rift in September last year after France decided to reduce the number of visas granted to Algerian officials, and Macron's critical remarks against Algeria.

In response, Algiers recalled its ambassador to France and closed its airspace to French military aircraft. After months of crisis, the two countries decided to resume political dialogue in December last year.
