Newcastle United landed Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad for 70 million euros (about $69.7 million), the English Premier League club announced on Friday.
The deal set a new transfer record for Newcastle. If they move Isak to another club in the future, Sociedad will retain 10 percent of that deal, according to ESPN.
"I'm delighted to have it done. It was a big, big decision for me but it is a decision I am really happy with," Isak said in an interview with the official website of Newcastle. "It is a great, historical club that I think anyone would like to play for, with amazing fans. They were a big part of why I came here – and also the club's project, which is one that I really believe in.
"You always want to go into a team and know how they play. I think Newcastle play very attractive football and I want to be a part of that."

Sociedad acquired Isak from Borussia Dortmund for 10 million euros (about $9.96 million) in 2019. He scored 44 goals and nine assists in 132 games for the Spanish club, for whom the sale also broke their previous outgoing transfer record fee of 32 million euros (about $32.9 million) secured for Spanish center-back Inigo Martinez's move to Athletic Bilbao.
"I'm very excited that Alexander has chosen to join us. He is an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to the team," Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle said. "He is technically very good, with a mix of attributes that will complement us, but he is also at a great age to grow with this club. I want to thank the club's owners and transfer committee for bringing Alexander to Newcastle. We are all delighted to have him on board."
Newcastle became a promising big buyer on the transfer market since they were purchased by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund in October 2021. Isak is the club's eighth signing during the summer window. They finished their first three games of the new season with one win and two draws.
