The Overseas Chinese World Conference for Promoting Peaceful Reunification of China was held on Saturday in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province.

More than 3,000 people from organizations for promoting China's peaceful reunification and related purposes, in over 120 countries and regions, attended the conference, either in person or online. The Chengdu Declaration was adopted at the conference.

One-China principle cannot be challenged

"There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This is a universally recognized norm governing international relations and the common consensus of the international community," read the declaration.

The declaration strongly opposed the visit of U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to China's Taiwan region in early August and called on peace-loving people around the world to "earnestly respect China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity," fully understand "the desire to realize the country's reunification," and support the unremitting efforts of the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to achieve peaceful reunification on the basis of the "1992 Consensus" that embodies the one-China principle.

Peaceful development of cross-Straits relations is unstoppable

The peaceful development and integrated development of cross-Straits relations are the right path to maintain cross-Straits peace and benefit compatriots on both sides of the Straits, the declaration said.

The declaration added it would maintain bonds of kinship and shared values, forge closer bonds of heart and mind between the people on both sides, and work with the Chinese people at home and abroad to create and share a bright future for national rejuvenation.

China must and will surely be reunified

A history of 5,000 years has proven that reunification has always been the mainstream of Chinese history, the declaration said.

"We sincerely hope that the majority of Taiwan compatriots could fully understand that the future of Taiwan lies in national reunification and the wellbeing of the people in Taiwan hinges on the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," read the declaration.

'Taiwan independence' leads nowhere

Noting that "Taiwan independence" is the biggest obstacle to China's reunification and a serious hidden danger to national rejuvenation, the declaration said that "Taiwan independence" goes against the tide of history, and it is a path that leads to nowhere.

The attempts by the so-called "Taiwan independence forces" are doomed to fail, and the outcome can only be ruined, it said.

The cause of promoting reunification will surely score victory

China's reunification will bring the world more opportunities and will not hurt the legitimate interests of any country, the declaration said.

Activities opposing "Taiwan independence" and calling for reunification, carried out by overseas Chinese in accordance with the local laws and regulations, are completely "justified, reasonable and legitimate," it said.

The declaration also urged a few countries to "stop interfering in China's internal affairs" and "return to the correct position of mutual respect and equal cooperation with the Chinese people."
