Russian defense ministry on Sunday blamed Ukraine for firing at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) twice in a day, adding that three shells fell in the area of a special building with nuclear fuel and radioactive waste.

According to the ministry's daily update, the radiation situation in the area of the plant is normal.

It also said that the Russian forces repelled the Ukrainian attack and hit military shops in Zaporizhzhia, where Ukrainian helicopters were being repaired.

In recent weeks, Ukraine and Russia have traded accusations of strikes on the facility.

Earlier on Sunday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Moscow is turning the Zaporizhzhia NPP into a military base and said the Russian military "must get out of the plant."
