The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday that China will keep defending the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) despite the recent disappointment of the NPT review conference results.

A spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks in a regular press conference in response to China's take on the results of the 10th Review Conference of the Parties to the NPT.

"China showed deep regret that the conference was not able to reach consensus, but again it proved that treaty mechanism isn't running in vacuum", said Zhao, adding that the conference wasn't a failure though the final document wasn't agreed upon.

Thoughts, perspectives and demands from all parties kept colliding during the conference, attaching significant implications on reflecting current international situation change and discussing the challenges of dealing with the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, Zhao said.

Zhao reiterated that China will still uphold its path to peaceful development and safeguard the purpose of the treaty, adding that China will faithfully fulfill any obligation from the treaty, safeguard the global strategic balance and stability and support the peaceful use of nuclear energy by development countries.

China, together with other signatories, will keep strengthening the universality, authority and validity of the treaty, adding more certainty to this turbulent world and making constant contribution to world peace, the spokesperson said.

Under the constant deterioration of global strategic security environment and the challenges faced by international nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation regime, this year's Review Conference of the Parties to the NPT was held in the headquarters of the United Nations from August 1 to 26. Delegates failed to reach agreement on a final document as it needed the approval of all 191 countries that are parties to the treaty to be adopted and many countries didn't agree with "a whole host of issues" in the last draft.
