China's qualifier Wu Yibing sailed into the U.S. Open men's singles second round with a victory in his Grand Slam main draw debut on Monday.

Wu, 22, swept past 31st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 and extended his winning streak this season to 14 matches.

He will face Portuguese qualifier Nuno Borges next, who eliminated local wildcard Ben Shelton.

China's Zhang Shuai advanced to the women's singles second round after a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jil Teichmann of Switzerland. Youngster Wang Xiyu came back from one set down to beat France's Diane Parry 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, setting up her next round with third-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece.

23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams, who announced to retire after the U.S. Open, cruised into the women's singles second round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Danka Kovinic from Montenegro.

Men's and women's top-ranked players including Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece, Dominic Thiem from Austria, and Simona Halep from Romania were stunned in the first round and suffered early exits.
