RJ Barrett of the New York Knicks is finalizing a four-year contract extension that could be worth up to $120 million with all the incentives and add-ons, his agent, Bill Duffy of BDA Sports and WME Sports, told ESPN on Monday.

As the third selection of the 2019 NBA Draft, Barrett is getting his extension later than Zion Williamson and Ja Morant, who were both selected before he was. Moreover, while the other two inked five-year, $193 million maximum deals (which can be up to $231 million), Barrett's new contract will be much less lucrative.

Nonetheless, it's still a good deal for him. Having played three seasons in the NBA, Barrett's stats have been growing in average points and triples made, but stalled in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, not to mention his field goal, 3-point and effective field goal percentages have dropped.

At least for now, Barrett seems more like a regular, low-efficient wing scorer with shortcomings on defense who is less likely to become a cornerstone player like Morant or Williamson. However, he is still luckier than Cam Reddish, who played at Duke alongside Williamson and Barrett and taken in the same draft class by the Atlanta Hawks in the 10th place. Not only was Reddish traded to the Knicks, he received no extension but a one-year, $8.1 million qualifying offer.

The timing of the extension with Barrett is interesting considering the Knicks have been negotiating with the Utah Jazz to trade for All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. Barrett could have been included in myriad packages the Knicks offered to the Jazz until he agreed to an extension.

ESPN revealed that Leon Rose, Knicks president of basketball operations, made Monday night a deadline for his and the Jazz sides to reach an agreement over any Mitchell trade or the Knicks would extend the contract of Barrett. Obviously, the two teams haven't reached any deal, especially when Danny Ainge, president of basketball operations of the Jazz, is waiting to squeeze every drop of value out of the team that trades for Mitchell.

It's not impossible, but very difficult to trade Barrett after the extension, which will give him a poison pill provision that will not be lifted until July 1, 2023. If the Knicks trade him before that, Barrett's salary will be calculated at $10.9 million, but the receiving team will have to give up a total salary of $26.2 million.

According to ESPN's data, a total of 179 players in NBA history have had the poison pill provision and only one of them was traded: Devin Harris, who was sent by the Dallas Mavericks with Keith Van Horn, Trenton Hassell, DeSagana Diop, Maurice Ager, $3 million cash and two first-round draft picks to the New Jersey Nets for Jason Kidd, Malik Allen and Antoine Wright in 2008.
