Chelsea's stuttering start to the Premier League season continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Southampton on Tuesday despite Raheem Sterling giving them an early lead.

Sterling struck in the 23rd minute with his third goal in two games, whereas Romeo Lavia leveled five minutes later with a thumping finish from outside the area, followed by a goal from Adam Armstrong in first-half stoppage time.

Southampton are now level with Thomas Tuchel's side in the standings, both with seven points.

"We struggled to find answers and find the way back if things don't go in our direction," Tuchel commented after the match.

Elsewhere in Europe, RB Leipzig eased into the German Cup second round after Timo Werner's hat-trick and Andre Silva's brace paved the way for an 8-0 win over lower league side Teutonia Ottensen.

In Italy, Inter Milan earned a comfortable 3-1 home win over Cremonese in their fourth Serie A match of the season.
