China's Zheng Qinwen and qualifier Yuan Yue eased into the U.S. Open women's singles second round on Tuesday, beating 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and Australian wildcard Jaimee Fourlis 6-3, 6-2, respectively.

Zheng and Ostapenko each took a set before Zheng was first beaten in the deciding set, but quickly bounced back to claim it 6-4.

Zheng, 19, entered the U.S. Open ranking 39th in the world. She started this season from world No.143, and had an impressive run at Roland Garros (in May) stunning Grand Slam with winner Simona Halep of Romania and French veteran Alize Cornet to reach the last 16 in what was her second Grand Slam campaign.
Zheng will meet Anastasia Potapova from Russia in the second round.

Yuan, 23, will meet either Elise Mertens of Belgium or Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu in the next round after her first victory in a Grand Slam main draw.

Also on Tuesday, world No.1 Iga Swiatek of Poland breezed into the second round over Italian Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-0. Former world No.1, two-time U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka of Japan suffered an early exit losing to American Danielle Collins 6-7(5), 3-6, joining defending champion Emma Raducanu of Britain who was defeated by Cornet 6-3, 6-3.

In the men's singles, Rafael Nadal shook off doubts on him after his loss in Cincinnati and moved past Australian Rinky Hijikata 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 to set up the next round with Italian Fabio Fognini. Fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz also advanced as Sebastian Baez of Argentina retired due to a leg injury in their first round matchup.

Both Borna Coric of Croatia and Jannik Sinner of Italy had to stick through five whole sets to stay in contention, while Cameron Norrie of Britain raced past Benoit Paire of France 6-0, 7-6(1), 6-0 in the opener.
