China's Wang Xiyu, Wu Yibing, and veteran Zhang Shuai reached the U.S. Open round of 32 on Wednesday.

This was the first time for Wang, 21, and Wu, 22, to reach the third round of a Grand Slam.

Wu made history on Monday as the first Chinese mainland player to sail into the men's singles second round at Flushing Meadows since the Open era, and stretched his run with a second victory edging out fellow qualifier Nuno Borges of Portugal 6-7 (3), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in four hours, setting up his next round with world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev from Russia.

Prior to Wu's five-set thriller, Wang shocked world No. 3 Maria Sakkari of Greece 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 while Zhang beat Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in straight sets to storm into the women's singles third round.

Meanwhile, 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams of the U.S. downed No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit from Estonia 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 to continue her run at what she hinted would be her farewell tour.

She is registered in both the singles and doubles contention this time, teaming up with her sister, Venus, with whom she shares 14 Grand Slam doubles titles. Venus also has seven Grand Slams singles titles under her belt.

Serena will next play with 29-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic from Australia for a seat in the fourth round, while the two sisters will kick off their doubles campaign against Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova, against whom the Williams sisters took a victory in the 2012 Wimbledon final.
