China's veteran Zhang Shuai advanced to the women's singles fourth round at the U.S. Open after beating Canada's Rebecca Marino in straight sets on Friday, setting up the next round with teenager Coco Gauff who downed fellow American Madison Keys.

Zhang, 33, only needed 63 minutes to claim a 6-2, 6-4 victory, which sent her to world No. 29 and the round of 16 in Flushing Meadows for the first time. Zhang has now reached the last 16 in all four Grand Slams.

Hours later, Zhang took the second victory of the day with Mate Pavic of Croatia in the mixed doubles first round against American pair Louisa Chirico and Bradley Klahn 7-6 (1), 6-3.

Earlier on Thursday, Zhang as the defending champion, advanced to the women's doubles second round with Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine.

Also on Friday, seventh seeds Chinese pair Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan proceeded to the women's doubles third round after defeating Swedish-Russian pair Rebecca Peterson and Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-4.
