David Moyes, manager of West Ham United, and Frank Lampard, manager of Everton, both criticized the video assistant referee (VAR) after the Premier League games on Saturday.

West Ham lost to Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge after blowing their 1-0 lead. It would have been a 2-2 draw for "The Hammers" if Maxwel Cornet's goal at the 90th minute hadn't been ruled out.

With West Ham on the attack, Reece James of Chelsea tried to pass the ball to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, but his header was too weak. Mendy had to come out of the goal to compete for the ball with Jarrod Bowen of West Ham. Mendy hit the ball out before lying on the field, appearing to be in pain, but Cornet got the ball and kicked it into the open goal.

While West Ham players were celebrating, referee Andy Madely went to check the replay and then ruled that Bowen had fouled Mendy before Cornet took his shot. As a result, the goal was overturned.

"Have you seen it? The goalkeeper comes to take it [the ball] and actually fumbles it about five or six yards then he acts as if he's got a shoulder injury. I am amazed that VAR sent the referee to see it," a furious Moyes told reporters after the game. "I thought even if he goes to the TV, there's no way he's overturning it. It was a ridiculously bad decision. The referee should have taken responsibility, there is no excuse for that not to be a goal."

"I've lost faith in the people who are putting it up for VAR. I can't see how the goal isn't given," he added. "It is a scandalous decision, absolutely rotten from one of the supposedly elite referees. I support a lot of the VAR stuff, I actually think the goalkeeper dives, he is faking an injury because he cannot get to the next one – he did the same on the first goal as well. The referee somehow gets that so wrong, it is incredible."

This season's first Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park ended at 0-0. Virgil van Dijk of "The Reds" caught Amadou Onana on the shin with his studs at the 76th minute, committing a foul that drew him a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor.

As manager of Everton, Lampard was unhappy that the VAR didn't call Taylor to check the screen to decide if it should be a red card for van Dijk's move.

"I love Virgil van Dijk, as a player he is fantastic. But sometimes you mistime tackles, it was up on Amadou's shin and his foot was on the ground," Lampard said after the game. "I'm surprised it hasn't gone to VAR and the ref [hasn't] gone to look at it and made the correct decision."

"It doesn't matter now, but for me it was a red and that changes the face of the last 20 minutes," he added. "There was some talk before this about bad tackles and the referee just has a job to do, and so does VAR, I just think they got that one wrong in my opinion."

Conor Coady scored a goal for Everton in the second half but Taylor ruled it out for being offside. A fan for the home team threw in a plastic bottle after that. Everton confirmed that this fan was banned from the stadium.
