Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai ended her singles journey at the U.S. Open after losing to American 12th seed Coco Gauff at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Sunday.

Eighteen-year-old Gauff, the runner-up at the French Open in June, reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the first time in a 7-5, 7-5 victory, becoming the youngest American woman to make it to the U.S. Open quarterfinals since Melanie Oudin, who accomplished the feat at the age of 17 in 2009.

Two-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist Zhang broke first in the second game, but Gauff returned two breaks soon to take a 4-3 lead, later trailing 5-4 in the opening set.

"It feels insane. I mean, Ashe Stadium chanting my name?" Gauff, yet to drop a set in the tournament, said during her on-court interview.

Speaking to Amazon Prime, she said, "It was really physical; it felt like a three-setter."

"I really think my mentality helped me today. I'm so happy, being in my home Slam and finally getting to a quarterfinal. This tournament has always been special for me, growing up watching it. I'm just so excited to continue to play and experience this atmosphere."

Gauff will fight for a semifinal berth against French player Caroline Garcia.

Zhang will continue her journey at U.S. Open in doubles matches as she has paired with Mate Pavic of Croatia in mixed doubles and teamed up with Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in women's doubles.
