The European Commission on Tuesday proposed fully suspending the EU's "Visa Facilitation Agreement" with Russia, according to a press release.

"The proposal to suspend the Visa Facilitation Agreement will put an end to all facilitations for Russian citizens applying for a short-stay visa to the Schengen area," the release said.

In practice, Russian applicants will face more restrictive rules on multiple-entry visas and a longer list of supporting documents.

The European Council will examine the proposal and decide whether to adopt it.

The EU-Russia Visa Facilitation entered into force in June 2007.

At their informal meeting on August 31, the EU Foreign Ministers agreed on the full suspension of the agreement with Russia.
