UN chief condemns suicide bombing outside Russian embassy in Kabul

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Monday's suicide attack outside the Russian embassy in Afghan capital Kabul.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Guterres offered condolences to the victims and their families and wished the wounded a speedy recovery.
The statement reiterated that any attack against civilians and civil facilities, including diplomatic missions, is strictly prohibited by the International Humanitarian Law.
UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) also condemned the attack in a tweet: "In light of recent events, UNAMA stresses the need for the de facto authorities to take steps to ensure the safety and security of the people as well as diplomatic missions."
At least six people, including two Russian embassy staff, were killed and 15 others were injured in the suicide bombing near the entrance of the embassy, the Russian Foreign Ministry and Afghanistan officials said on Monday.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that an unidentified militant set off an explosive device near the entrance to the embassy's consular section. Police said the attacker was shot dead by armed guards as he approached the gate, in one of the first such attacks since the Taliban took power last year.
Militant group Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K) posted a message on its website on Monday claiming responsibility for the attack.
