U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken gives a gift to Marina, 6, from the Kherson region, during his visit to the children's hospital in Kyiv, Ukraine, September 8, 2022. /Reuters
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken paid a surprise visit to Kyiv on Thursday in a show of support to Ukraine.
"I have directed a $675 million drawdown of arms and equipment from the Department of Defense stockpiles for Ukraine, as well as an additional $2.2 billion to support long-term defense investments in Ukraine and 18 neighbors," he said.
During the unannounced trip, Blinken made a speech at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv and Ukrainian media also reported that a meeting between Blinken and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba was held. The U.S. diplomat also visited a children's hospital in Kyiv.
