Women's tennis world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated Ons Jabeur of Tunisia to win her second Grand Slam title of the year with a straight sets victory in the U.S. Open final on Saturday.

The Polish star overcame a spirited second set fightback from fifth seed Jabeur to win 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) in one hour and 52 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

The victory followed Swiatek's win at the French Open in June, making the 21-year-old the first woman since 2016 to win two Grand Slams in a single season.

"I needed to stay composed and focus on the goals," Swiatek said during the trophy ceremony. "It's New York. It's so loud. It's so crazy," she said. "It's really mind-blowing for me. I’m really proud I could handle it mentally."

Swiatek's 10th career title also extended her remarkable record in tournament finals.

She has now won her last 10 finals, without dropping a set.

But the loss was another agonizing near-miss for Jabeur, who had been bidding to become the first woman from Africa to win a Grand Slam.

"This is Swiatek's seventh title of the year. She's the first woman to do that since Serena Williams in 2014 and the first No.1 seed to take the title since Williams eight years ago," according to an article on the Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) website.

"To put this win in context, consider that Swiatek is the youngest woman to win her third major title since Maria Sharapova (20) in 2008. Swiatek is only the ninth player of the Open Era to win her third major before turning 22. The previous eight, her new peers at the top of tennis: Sharapova, Justine Henin, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Stefanie Graf and Chris Evert," the article added.
