The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 17-16 at Lumen Field in Seattle in their first game of the 2022 NFL regular season on Monday.
Broncos quarterback (QB) Russell Wilson, who had played 10 seasons for the Seahawks before being traded in March, had a good taste of being a visitor at Lumen Field. Home fans, nicknamed "the 12th Man" for their incredible impact on the competitions, booed him relentlessly.
It's hard to say how much Wilson was affected by the noise. He passed 29-for-42 for 340 yards and connected with wide receiver Jerry Jeudy for a 67-yard touchdown pass. However, that's the only touchdown the Broncos got after having two fumbles, both one yard in front of the opponents' red zone.

The Broncos' radical offensive choices had a lot to do with those two failures, which probably convinced the team to shoot a field goal at 64 yards instead of trying to drive forward at the fourth- or fifth-yard line in the last 20 seconds of the final quarter.
Brandon McManus, who scored 10 points for all three of his previous shots, missed the 64-yard field goal. It is not entirely surprising since the longest shot made in NFL history was at 66 yards by Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens against the Detroit Lions in 2021. Matt Prater of the Broncos scored a 64-yard field goal against the Tennessee Titans in 2013, and that was the second-longest shot in league history.

Compared with nine-time Pro-Bowler Wilson, Seahawks QB Geno Smith performed great in Monday's game. He threw 23-for-28 for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Smith played only 15 games in the past six seasons, and understandably many people considered him a bust. If he continues to play like this, he can probably help the Seahawks speed up their rebuild process.
"For him to go out there and get a win like that shows the confidence we have in him," Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf said.
Despite the victory, Monday's game was far from perfect for the Seahawks. All of their points were scored in the first half. When their play-action passes ceased to work, the team ran out of offensive options. It was their resilient defense and the Broncos' problematic decisions that helped the team win at home.
