In 1840, Britain launched the first Opium War against China. It ended with the Qing Government's defeat. China was reduced to a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society. But that defeat also inspired patriotic Chinese intellectuals to learn from the West about ways to rebuild the country and regain its dignity.
