Two people were killed and at least 43 people injured after Typhoon Nanmadol swept across Japan's Kyushu Island on Sunday night, local media reported, with severe conditions continuing on Monday.
The typhoon will affect a wide area from western Japan to northern Japan, bringing heavy rains and gale winds, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
It has also left about 300,000 households without power.
Millions of Japanese have been told to evacuate and stay vigilant against storms, the JMA said.
There have been large disruptions in transportation. More than 700 airline flights scheduled for Monday have been canceled. Shinkansen train services have also been widely suspended.
