China's first cluster of offshore gas fields has maintained stable growth in gas production for 19 consecutive years, supplying more than 60 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Hainan Province. The Dongfang gas fields cluster, consisting of 10 offshore production platforms, one onshore processing terminal and several oil and gas offshore pipelines, is the biggest self-run gas field in terms of production located in the western part of the South China Sea. Construction of the smart offshore gas fields cluster began nearly 20 years ago and was completely finished in April 2021. It has become the main source of gas for residential and industrial uses in Hainan. In recent years, advanced technologies have been adopted to develop new and smart natural gas exploration means.
