The French Football Federation (FFF) said on Monday that it will review its agreement with the French national team players over their image rights as quickly as possible after young star Kylian Mbappe and several other senior players refused to attend sponsorship events of the national team.

The French national team was scheduled to take a team photo and take part in other activities at their Clairefontaine training base on Tuesday for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, Mbappe and some of his teammates refused to participate. According to ESPN, the Paris Saint-Germain striker doesn't want to endorse some of the sponsors that have contracts with the national team. Instead, he wants a say over which companies can use players' image rights for international duty, and how much content they can use.

"I have decided to not take part in the photo shoot after the French federation's refusal to change the image rights agreement with the players," Mbappe said in a statement. "My representatives and I fully regret that no agreement could be reached, as asked, before the World Cup."

It's not rare for superstars to disagree with clubs or national teams over image rights. Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi had differences with Real Madrid and Barcelona when they were negotiating contract extensions because image rights of players at their level are worth too much to be given away. Mbappe is seen as the heir apparent to Ronaldo and Messi and thus has every reason to negotiate a better deal for himself over image rights.

ESPN revealed that Hugo Lloris and Raphael Varane were on Mbappe's side during the negotiations with FFF President Noel Le Graet on Monday. In the end, the players and the federation agreed that the current agreement needs to change.

"After positives exchanges between the leaders of the team, the president of the federation, the head coach and a member of the marketing department of the federation, the FFF is committed to revise as quickly as possible the agreement on the image rights tied to the players. The federation is delighted to work over a new agreement," the FFF said in a statement.
