The China Institute of International Studies has hosted the second Middle East Security Forum in Beijing. Officials from China and the Middle East took part in the event both online and in person. China offered a series of suggestions to help create a "new security architecture" in the region. Sun Ye has more.
At the second edition of Middle East Security Forum, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi offered suggestions for a "new security architecture" for the region in a video message.
WANG YI State Councilor, Foreign Minister of China "Countries in the Middle East are connected and the major issues there are linked together, so they should be addressed systematically and with an overall point of view. No country should aim for its own safety unilaterally. Meanwhile, we don't believe there's a 'power-vacuum' in the region. The people in the Middle East make their own destiny. We believe the course for the region should be charted by the countries in the Middle East themselves. The new security architecture should go by UN charters and principles. China also stands by resolving issues through dialogue. We support the establishment of a gulf security dialogue platform."
The former prime ministers of Palestine and Jordan were among the speakers. They welcomed China's stance and propositions as "consistent" and "laudable."
China's vice foreign minister also addressed the forum and called for an end to unilateral sanctions.
DENG LI China's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs "China is against illegal, unilateral sanctions, and imposed (so-called) solutions. We urge the international community to work together constructively and support a secure Middle East."
SUN YE Beijing "Attendees from the Middle East also say, China's Belt and Road Initiative is bringing much new growth opportunities, and to take part in the Belt and Road initiative, the Middle East must first become stable and secure. SY, CGTN, BJ."
