A power station worker has been rescued by local villagers more than two weeks after a major earthquake hit China's Sichuan Province. He was left on a mountainside by a colleague who went to look for help. GUO TIANQI has more.
GAN YU Survivor "Is the government here? My name is GANYU, tell them I've been found."
GANYU was found in an area on the border of Shimian and Luding counties, with complex mountainous terrain and dense forests.
NI TAIGAO Resident, Yuejin village Shimian County "In the mountains, there are thorns everywhere, and there is basically no road. He cried when I found him, and said he would have died if it had not been for me."
Gan Yu was working at the Wandong hydropower station in Luding County when the earthquake occurred. He helped his colleague to release water from the dam, to protect villages from flooding. But while trying to leave the area, he became exhausted and weak and decided to wait where he was, as his colleague left to look for help. His colleague was found three days later, but Gan Yu waited for 17 days.
Myopia made it difficult for him to find his way and he had to rely on spring water and wild fruits to survive. When he was found, he was extremely thin and covered in bruises.
HUANG JUNHUA Doctor, People's Hospital Luding County "He had multiple rib fractures and subcutaneous emphysema all over his body, which required further examination to clarify the cause and treatment."
Different rescue teams searched for MENG HU GANG using drones and other life detecting devices. They say Gan Yu must have suffered from food and water shortages, low temperature and lots of aftershocks, it's a miracle that he survived.
Gan Yu has been transferred to West China Hospital in Sichuan's capital Chengdu for further treatment. GUO TIANQI, CGTN, Sichuan Province.
