Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday praised Costa Rica's reiterated commitment to the one-China principle at a meeting with Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Arnoldo Andre Tinoco on the sidelines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The new Costa Rican government does not allow any form of "Taiwan independence" activities in the Central American country, which has effectively reinforced the political groundwork of the relations between Beijing and San Jose, Wang said.

Similarly, China will keep standing with Costa Rica, supporting its defense for sovereign independence and its rightful demands for development interests, Wang said, adding that the two sides will continue mutual cooperation.

Tinoco said Costa Rica firmly stands by the one-China principle. He also spoke highly of and expressed willingness to participate in the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, both proposed by China.

The Costa Rican foreign minister also thanked China for providing aid to his country to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and floods.

With the development of bilateral relations enjoying sound momentum, the Costa Rican government looks forward to deepening practical cooperation with China on the basis of their free trade agreement, Tinoco said.
