A pair of critically endangered yellow-breasted buntings were spotted in coastal wetlands near Wuxi City in east China's Jiangsu Province.

Yellow-breasted buntings, a species under China's national first-class protection, were once abundant and widespread, but their population has plummeted by around 90 percent in the past 40 years.

"It is similar to the sparrow in size, but it is far less numerous. The yellow-breasted bunting is under national first-class protection in our country. If you see birds like this, we recommend that you watch them from a distance and don't disturb them. And please don't encroach on their living environment. That's the best way to protect them," said Feng Yao, an officer at the Forestry and Wetland Division of the Natural Resources and Planning Bureau of Wuxi City.
