Installation of a prefabricated dome was completed at No. 2 unit of Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant in south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday, according to its developer, the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN).

The project involves the building of six nuclear power units using Hualong One, a domestically designed third-generation reactor, at the plant. Construction of the first phase of the project – No. 1 and No.2 units – began in 2019 and 2020, respectively, according to the CGN.

The 225-tonne dome is designed to ensure the integrity and airtightness of the reactor building.

"We adopted a building information model and other intelligent technologies to carry out animation simulation on the lifting process, so as to identify difficulties in advance and formulate solutions to ensure the success of the lifting," said Yan Shaohua, deputy general manager of CGN's Huizhou Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.

When completed, the six nuclear power units will generate 50 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, and reduce standard coal consumption by 15.12 million tonnes and carbon dioxide emissions by 41.6 million tonnes per year, according to the CGN.
