Residents in Okinawa, Japan, have long suffered from the noise harassment of U.S. military aircraft and the threat of crashes. Various road accidents and other crimes caused by the U.S. troops have severely disturbed the daily lives of Okinawan people. Recently, extremely high levels of a suspected carcinogen were detected on the grounds of an elementary school next to the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, sparking concerns over students' health.
