A procession of worshipers draped in red robes entered Confucian Temple in Qufu City in east China's Shandong Province to the soft sound of traditional Chinese string music and the aroma of incense on Wednesday, marking the anniversary of the birth of the ancient Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius (551-479 B.C.).

Held in the hometown of the philosopher, the ceremony is the largest of numerous ceremonies and celebrations across China marking Confucius' birthday, which falls on September 28.

Confucius' memorial ceremony dates back to 478 B.C., one year after his death, and has continued uninterrupted for over 2,000 years, making it a miracle in the history of world rites.

The ceremony features a variety of performance arts, such as singing, dancing, playing musical instruments and rites. The first public ceremony since the founding of the People's Republic of China was held in 2004 at Confucian Temple in Qufu. It was included in the first national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
