The Songhua River is China's northernmost river system.
It has two main branches, one beginning in the Changbai Mountains and the other stemming from the Daxing'anling Mountains. Spanning 2,300 kilometers, the Songhua River cuts across the Northeast China Plain before emptying into the Heilongjiang River.
The river is the primary source of drinking and irrigation water for northeast China, the leading grain production region in China where one-fifth of the national grain is produced.
The extreme flatness of the Northeast China Plain has caused the river to meander widely over time, filling the wide plain with oxbow lakes, as remnants of the previous paths of the river.
During winter, the river is frozen as hard as rock, and turns into a giant winter playground for all kinds of ice sports.
