Italian energy group Eni on Saturday announced that no gas supplies would come from Russia on October 1.
"Gazprom has announced that it cannot confirm the delivery of the volumes of gas requested for today due to the declared impossibility of transporting the gas through Austria," the company said in a statement. "Today, therefore, the flows of Russian gas destined for Eni through the Tarvisio entry point will be zero. Eni reserves the right to communicate any resumption of supplies."
Russia's Gazprom later confirmed the suspension and blamed Austria for not confirming the transit due to regulatory changes at the end of September.
The Russian company added it's working on solving the problem together with the Italian side.
