Documenting China's Modernization EP 16: China's First Olympian 1932
00:48

Sprinter Liu Changchun was the first Chinese athlete to participate in the Olympic Games. The Dalian native was the sole competitor from China at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and the Chinese delegation, which included just six people, had to seek donations to pay for their return trip after the Games. Liu did not win a medal but his efforts represented a crucial step forward for China at the Olympics.
