The San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 24-9 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Monday to secure their second win of the 2022 NFL regular season.

In his second start of the season, 49ers quarterback (QB) Jimmy Garoppolo completed 16 of 27 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown with no interception. Considering that Garoppolo didn't have much time to build chemistry with his teammates after skipping training camp due to shoulder surgery, he has slowly but surely performed better and better.

"There was honestly a point, I think it was 14-9, and it's not that we relaxed on offense – but you feel confident in the guys on defense," Garoppolo said. "Those guys, I don't watch much of it, but the couple plays I do see, it's hell for the quarterback. I love having them on my side, hate going against them in practice, but it makes us better so it's a good group over there. They're tough."

The 49ers' offensive line did a remarkable job of protecting Garoppolo as they kept him from being sacked. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel had six catches for 115 yards, including connecting with Garoppolo for a 57-yard receiving touchdown. Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. scored a 32-yard rushing touchdown for the 49ers as well.

The 49ers' defense contributed as much as their offensive counterparts did in Monday's game. They sacked Rams QB Matthew Stafford five times, which resulted in a loss of 54 yards, and paralyzed the opponents' offense, which scored only three field goals and no touchdowns.

49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Stafford's pass at 6:27 in the fourth quarter and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown to extend the team's lead to 24-9 after Robbie Gould made the extra point kick.

"I think it's best in the league," 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa said of the team's defense. "That's kind of our mindset every year, and this year we have the personnel to do it. Not that we haven't in the past, but just all three levels are elite players."

The Rams fall to 2-2 this season after the loss. Stafford completed 32 of his 48 passes for 254 yards, but none of his completions were longer than 20 yards. Moreover, the Rams' offense became so predictable to the 49ers because wide receiver Cooper Kupp was targeted 19 times. Though he caught 14 of them, which set a new career record, it didn't translate into a valuable offensive performance on the field.

"The story of the night from an offensive perspective was self-inflicted wounds," Rams head coach Sean McVay said. "Just above-the-neck errors where we're not doing the things that we are capable of and I expect us to be better than that."
